Can IR light harm the eye?

It is known that the eye becomes somewhat dry when exposed to infra-red (IR) light. I use an unmodified off-the-shelf webcam. It has 6 IR-LEDs. My simple logic is: They shouldn't be allowed to sell it if it possibly could do harm. But don't go over the top: stop experimenting whenever you feel any discomfort!
